Hiking to Mount Teide, Tenerife: Views from Pico Viejo and Fortaleza

Mount Teide, or Monte Teide, with its peak at 3718 m (12188 feet), ranks fourth among the world's highest volcanoes when measured from the ocean floor. Formed just 170,000 years ago, Teide is based in the Las Cañadas crater, at an altitude of about 2190 m (7190 feet) above sea level, making it the third highest volcanic structure on Earth according to UNESCO and NASA.

The volcano and its surroundings are part of the Teide National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The park, covering an area of 18900 hectares, is the most visited natural wonder in Spain and the most visited national park in Spain and Europe, attracting about 3 million visitors annually. By 2016, the park had 4,079,823 visitors, setting a historical record.

On the eastern slopes of the mountain is the Teide Observatory, a major international astronomical observatory, making this place not only a paradise for nature lovers but also a center of scientific research for astronomers from around the world.
