Description
Introduction
Montaña Guajara, also known as Alto de Guajara, is one of the most expressive mountain peaks in Tenerife, reaching an altitude of 2,715 metres above sea level. This mountain, located in the Teide National Park, represents an important element of the Las Cañadas del Teide natural enfilatre and is the fourth highest point both on the island and in the entire Canary Archipelago, behind Teide, Pico Viejo and Montaña Blanca.
Geological structure
Montaña Guajara was formed by volcanic activity that began about 3 million years ago. This period saw the formation of a series of lava flows II, III and IV that initially formed the structure known as Edificio pre-Cañadas and later Edificio Cañadas I in Tenerife. However, this geological site underwent a series of collapses that led to the formation of the present-day Las Cañadas del Teide crater.
Under the influence of these processes, the magma chamber beneath the mountain experienced significant subsidence, causing the central part of the area to collapse, while the peripheral areas remained at their original heights. These conditions formed the Alto de Guajara, which is dominated by volcanic elements of type aa (ignimbrites) as well as other volcanic rocks.
Flora and fauna
Montaña Guajara is renowned for its unique flora. In April 2020, a new species of violet was discovered here, called Viola guaxarensis. This species, like the other Canarian violets Viola cheiranthifolia (Teide violet) and Viola palmensis (La Palma violet), is adapted to high altitude conditions.
Legends
Montaña Guajara holds in its rocks not only geological history, but also many legends rooted in the culture of Tenerife's indigenous Guanches. The most famous legend is that of Princess Guajara, the heroine of a poem by Antonio de Viana. According to this legend, Guajara was a Guanche princess who could not bear the loss of her beloved Tinguaro, who fell at the Battle of Aguera. In despair, she threw herself from the heights of the mountain, after which the mountain was named after her. However, research shows that in reality, the poet used the already existing name of the mountain to create his character.
These myths and legends add a special atmosphere when climbing the mountain, making every step on its slopes a part of ancient history.
Hiking Trails
For hikers and climbers, Mount Guajara offers several routes to reach its summit. These routes have varying degrees of difficulty, but each offers magnificent panoramas of Teide National Park and the surrounding area.
One popular route starts at a place known as Parador Nacional and leads through dramatic landscapes to the top of the mountain. This route takes approximately 5-6 hours round trip, providing climbers with an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to see rare species of plants and animals.
Historical and cultural significance
The name "Guajara" comes from the indigenous Guanche people, the original inhabitants of Tenerife. According to a poem by the Tinerfena poet Antonio de Viana, Guajara was the name of a Guanche princess who, after losing her lover Tinguaro at the Battle of Aguera, threw herself off the mountain that gave her her name. However, modern research suggests that the story was reversed: Viana used an already existing toponym for her character.
Modern meaning
Today, Montaña Guajara is a popular destination for trekkers, photographers and anyone who wants to learn more about Tenerife's unique natural and cultural features. Teide National Park, where the mountain is located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts thousands of visitors every year with its spectacular landscapes and biodiversity.
Conclusion
Montaña Guajara is not only impressive for its natural beauty and challenging trails, but is also a testament to Tenerife's rich history and culture. Climbing or simply exploring this peak is an unforgettable adventure that opens up new horizons and gives a deeper insight into the nature of this unique island.
