Teide Observatory

Observatorio del Teide is one of the world's leading astronomical observatories, located on the island of Tenerife, Spain. History

The history of Observatorio del Teide dates back to the early 1960s, when international co-operation led to the decision to establish an astronomical observatory in the Canary Islands. The choice of location was due to the unique natural conditions of Tenerife, which provided ideal conditions for astronomical observations: low cloud cover, high atmospheric transparency and remoteness from sources of light pollution.

The founding of the observatory in 1964 was supported by both the Spanish government and the international scientific community. The Observatorio del Teide began with a focus on solar research, made possible by the installation of one of the world's first solar telescopes.

Over time, the observatory expanded its scientific capacity. In the 1970s and 1980s, new telescopes were installed to study distant galaxies, stars and other cosmic objects. This was made possible thanks to international funding and co-operation with the world's major universities and scientific institutions.

In 1985, the Norbert Telescope was opened on the territory of the observatory, which became one of the most accurate and powerful instruments in the world for studying space objects in the infrared and optical ranges. This event significantly strengthened the Observatory's position in the international scientific community.

Climate

The climate of the Observatorio del Teide plays a key role in the success of astronomical observations. Located at an altitude of over 2300 metres above sea level, the observatory is above the main mass of atmospheric clouds, which significantly improves the quality of observations due to less atmospheric interference.

The climate in this region is classified as high mountainous, which ensures clear skies for most of the year. Temperatures can range from +20°C during the day to 0°C and below at night, especially during the winter months. These conditions require specialised equipment and clothing for those working or visiting the observatory.

A key aspect of the climate is also the low humidity, which is crucial for astronomical observations as moisture in the atmosphere can significantly distort incoming cosmic signals. Due to the dry air, stars and other celestial objects are observed at high resolution, allowing for accurate scientific studies.

Winds in the Observatorio del Teide area are usually moderate, which also benefits the stability of the telescopes and minimises vibrations that interfere with the accuracy of observations. However, at certain times of the year, stronger wind gusts are possible, requiring additional precautions and equipment protection.

This tour includes transport with an English and/or Spanish speaking guide. The group begins their journey with an evening tour of the Observatorio del Teide, during which a Starlight guide explains the importance of the Canarian sky, the observatory's telescopes and the scientific projects of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. After sunset, the group travels to the foot of the Teide Telescope where, away from the city lights, participants can observe the starry sky with the naked eye and through long-range telescopes. How to get to the Observatorio del Teide

There are different ways to get to the Observatorio del Teide, depending on your location in Tenerife.

    1. From the south of the island

For those in the south of Tenerife, the most convenient route starts from the TF-1 motorway. You'll need to switch to the TF-21 road, which leads through Villaflor to Teide National Park. This road passes by scenic areas and provides the opportunity to see amazing landscapes. The journey takes approximately 1-1.5 hours depending on the starting point.

    2. From the north of the island

If you are in the northern part of the island, the best option is the TF-24 road, which starts in La Laguna and leads directly to the eastern part of Teide National Park. This route is known for its spectacular views of the volcano and local flora. The journey will also take around 1-1.5 hours depending on the starting location.

• Puerto de La Cruz → Izaña

In both cases the road is well signposted and maintained, but it is important to remember that conditions in the mountains can change quickly, so it is advisable to check weather conditions before travelling. Also be aware that during the winter months, roads can be slippery or even temporarily closed due to snow or ice.
